The chemical that puts the heat in hot chili peppers is capsaicin (kap-say-ih-sin).
Yet scientists have known for some time that when applied to the skin, this same compound can diminish pain. But how that chili gel killed pain has remained somewhat of a mystery. Until now.
Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disorder worldwide. The predominant symptom, pain, usually treated with acetaminophen or oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, associated with a significant risk of side effects.
Topical capsaicin Gel may represent an effective and safe alternative
Topical capsaicin has a good safety profile and efficacy in reducing osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, neuralgia and many more
Arthritis being the most common and primary cause of joint pain. It affects mostly adults over the age of 40. There are two main types of arthritis; rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). The latter is known to affect the joints that are commonly used which are basically every joint; the wrists, knees, hands, knees, and spine. It is common among adults aged over 40.
RA, on the other hand, affects less people. It is more common in women than it is in men. It is an autoimmune inflammatory disorder that affects the joints.
In the body, capsaicin jump starts a chemical chain reaction. The first step in that chain reaction is where capsaicin turns on a protein — Trpv1 — that senses heat. But the compound does quite a bit more, it turns out.
More importantly for pain control: turning on Trpv1 floods pain-sensing nerves with calcium. That calcium boost causes a drop in levels of two fatty substances, known as lipids. They are known as phosphoinositide's. These lipids reside in the wall (membranes) of nerve cells. The lipid dip, in turn, silences two proteins. They’re called Piezo 1 and 2.
